  Lame?

Posted on November 15th, 2007 by Bastom

Yeah pretty lame.. makes a blog.. but can’t manage to keep posting on a regular base on it! Heck, did i mention i’m to busy yet??

anyway, go check out the gear page!! I remade it a bit.. go click on a item. Yeah i know, still need to add lots of information!! Probably even reviews!

Anyway, i have a new toy to play with. To bad i still don’t have a decent digi to take pictures from it! BUT.. besides still trying to conquer my basses.. i am learning a new instrument!

The Lapsteel…

This is not mine, but one from the internet. It looks almost exactly the same as mine, except, mine has two single coils instead of one. And also two switches to mute the coils! Its a 60’s Guyatone Lapsteel, and sounds increadable on my Ampeg SVT Classic!
However, for practice purpose (also for my guitars) i bought myself a new amp for at the appartment! It’s a Fender Champion 600:

[ Officiall Website ]

It’s a small 5 watt all tubes amp but sounds extremely good for its size!
I’m rocking the thing!

Any tips on playing (or learning to play) the lapsteel, let me know!! I still can’t do very much on it.. yet!

I agree, you rarely see bass players playing the gibby’s. But since I do, and now own two different ones (the RD and the Thunderbird), I fell in love with them. In my search for information, I came across some great players who played Gibson basses too. This is a short list of them I wanted to chair with you:

Gibson Ripper

Krist Novoselic (Nirvana)
Michael Shuman (Qotsa)

Mikey Welsh (Weezer)
Suzi Quatro Live in Japan 1975

Gibson Grabber

Gene Simmons (KISS)

John Entwistle (The Who)
Mike Dirnt (Green Day)
Mark Evans (AC/DC) (G3)

Gibson EB-0

Gene Simmons (KISS)
Jack Bruce (Cream)
Jeordie White
Mike Watt

Gibson EB-3

Jack Bruce (Cream)
Bill Wyman (Rolling Stones)
Trevor Bolder (David Bowie)
Mike Watt (Minutemen)
Chris White (The Zombies)
Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)

Also, the song “Radar Love” by Golden Earring was recorded on a Gibson EB-3.

Gibson RD

Krist Novoselic (Nirvana)

Thunderbird IV

Chris Squire (Yes)
Nikki Sixx (Mötley Crüe)
Krist Novoselic (Nirvana)
Dolf de Borst (The Datsuns)
Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)

Shavo Odadjian (System of a Down)
John Entwistle (The Who)

Frankie Poullain (ex- The Darkness)
Stefan Olsdal (Placebo)
Jeordie White (Twiggy Ramirez) (ex-Marilyn Manson, A Perfect Circle, current Nine Inch Nails)
Adam Clayton
(U2)
Chris Wolstenholme (Muse)
Cliff Williams (AC/DC)
Disclaimer: yeah, I know, there are more playes out there playing a Gibson - I just included those I know.

Lol, I first made another great post here, but as soon as I re-read my previous post I knew this post had to contain some great news!!!

Okey, here it goes.. you all are invited to my B-Day party at J.O.C. ‘t Scharnier on October 27th 2007 starting around 2100!! B There!!! In Halloweenstyle!

Posted on October 1st, 2007 by Bastom

I guess you where right!

Besides that, I wanted to share with the rest of the world that I am still alive… not very healthy, actually pretty sick right now.. but ALIVE.

We made two new songs in Semper Fi’s last rehearsal.. it was fun! And I like the new sound! They still need some tweaking tho…

Oh, btw… A lot is happening - thats why the float of posts has drained a bit… but keep this blog/news thingy close…. cause when I will make the next post expect some great news!

Posted on September 18th, 2007 by Bastom

Well, if you want to read something serious go check www.polderrecors.be. But here, I wanted to have some fun: ENJOY!

Q. How do you know when a bass player is at the door trying to get in?
A. He keeps fumbling around trying to find the right key.

Q. Why don’t bass players play hide and seek?
A. Because no one will look for them.

Q. How many bass players does it take to change a light bulb?
A. Never mind. The keyboard player can do it with his left hand.

Q. How many bass players does it take to change a light bulb?
A. None! They let the keyboard player do it with his left hand.
A. One, but the guitarist has to show him first.
A. Three! One to hold the bulb and two to drink ’till the room spins.
A. Six: One to change it, five to fight off the lead guitarists who are hogging the light.

Q. How many good bass players does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A. Only one. But good luck trying to find him.

Q. How can you tell if there was a bass player at last week’s session?
A. He’s still there!

Q. What’s the definition of a gentleman?
A. Someone who knows how to play the bass and doesn’t.

A missionary goes to the most remote part of jungle. As soon as he arrives in the village he is to visit, he hears drums beating wildly in the distance. He asks the Chief what the drums mean. The Chiefs reply is “Drums play, good. Drums stop, bad.” During the missionaries entire month long stay he frequently asks the Chief about the continuous drumming. The Chiefs reply is always the same. “Drums play good. Drums stop bad. Finally as the missionary is leaving he asks the Chief again about the drumming. The Chief says “Drums play, g…” “I know, I know” says the missionary. “Drums play, good. Drums stop, bad. But why is it bad when the drums stop?” The Chief shakes his head and says” Drums stop, bass solo.

Doctor, doctor, will I be able to play the bass after the operation?” “Yes, of course…” Great! I never could before!

10 Ways to drive Guitarists Crazy
1/ Use a whammy bar better than they
2/Consistently use drop D tuning so they can’t cheat off your hand position
3/ Use a fancy preamp with nicer sounding distortion and/or FX
4/ mimic all their leads, you can do it better, anyway
5/ Use a Pitch Transposer or Piccollo bass.
6/ constantly remind the guitarist that it takes them 6 strings to do what you can do with 4 {may not work if the guitarist can count past 4 and you have a 5 or 6 string}
7/use an 8 string bass ;)
8/ keep telling them they’re out of tune, they usually are.
9/ learn the acrobatics and finger tricks, and do them better
10/have the biggest……floor controller
If you as a bassist do these things correctly, you may achieve the ultimate accolade: The GTR may walk off the stage in midset, leaving you to finish.
If they keep mouthing off, just put some sheet music in front of them, that usually shuts them up……

A couple goes to see a marriage counselor. They say their marriage is on the rocks because they never speak to each other. The counselor tries to get them to talk, but they just sit there with their arms folded and their mouths closed. He tries playing games. He tries tricking them. Nothing he can do can get them to talk to each other. Finally, he pulls out an electric bass and starts playing a solo. Instantly, the couple turns to each other and starts conversing for the
first time in months.
’How on earth did you know that would work?’ they ask.
’Simple’ he says, ‘Everyone always talks during the bass solo.’

A bass player was hiking in the mountains, and he came upon a shepherd who was tending a large herd of sheep that were grazing in the alpine meadow. The bass player took a fancy to the sheep, and asked the shepherd: “If I can guess how many sheep you have, can I have one?”
The shepherd thought this was an odd request, but thought that there was little chance that the man would guess the exact number of sheep, so he said “Sure.” The bass player guessed “You have 287 sheep,” to the shepherd’s astonishment, since this was exactly how many sheep he had. The bass player got all excited and asked “Can I pick out my sheep now?” and the shepherd grudgingly gave his permission. The bass player selected his sheep, bent over, and swung the sheep over his shoulders, to carry home with him.
The shepherd then asked “If I guess what your occupation is, can I have my sheep back?” The bass player was a bit surprised by this, but figured that it was unlikely that the shepherd would be able to guess his occupation, and went along with the deal. The shepherd then guessed “You’re a bass player, aren’t you?” The bass player was very surprised and asked, “How did you know?”
The shepherd responded, “Put the dog down and we’ll talk about it.”

Q - Why are all these bass jokes one liners?
A - So the rest of the band can understand them.

Late one day a local pub saw six guys walk in, obviously in pairs of two, sit down and order their favorite after-work drinks.

The first two to seat themselves and be served by the bartender were two guys working at a major university whose I.Q.s were so high they could hardly be measured! They began discussing from Quantum Mechanics to the fine points of Particle Physics, either one as brilliantly as the other.

The bartender then went over to the next pair who were “regular guys” with ordinary jobs, with average I.Q.s, schmoozing about how hard it was today to keep up with bill payments, how high taxes were, how corrupt politicians were and all the day-to-day struggles most everyone has.

The last two the bartender served were two very badly educated, ill-mannered dolts with very low I.Q.s that could barely be measured on any I.Q. test. As soon as they’d ordered the bartender overheard one say to the other, “Oh, hey, I meant to ask ya, d’you use flatwound or roundwound on your bass?”

I was just thinking… how boring my layout is… I need to redesign my blog… BRB!

Posted on September 14th, 2007 by Bastom

Here comes the n3rd!

Yeah, it’s not always about music! Today i messed around a bit in CSS. Particularly playing around with DIV’s!
I won’t explain it, cause that would be boring… but just check out the links now on the left here. I made them in its own DIV using CSS to tell that the DIV should be absolute and thus fixed! So go ahead, scroll with the horizontal ruler (at the bottom) to check my previous post, and notice that my menu just stays where it was! NICE! Thats how I like it. Do what I say, and stay the hell there! I sure hope it works will all kind of browsers, and doesn’t explode my layout up! We’ll see.

I also learned some kewl javascript. Again, I learned it with tutorials from the net, (go use google and search them! ) and i wont go in details more.. just show it to you. Check it out. Yeah, just click the dam photo already!

Posted on September 10th, 2007 by Bastom

Hey.. whats this??!! You can comment again??? Go SPAMBOTS! This is your chance again! To SPAM not only my blog but also my mail, since every time someone posts a comment i get a mail! Anyway… the layout still sucks, hope this will get fixed soon… BUT in mean time, have fun commenting me on all my great spelling errors!! OR just tell me what a wonderful little blog i have and how well i keep it up to date! Or just tell me “HI”!

Go ahead! don’t be shy..

  Synths

Posted on September 10th, 2007 by Bastom

Yeah.. i finally got into synths.

Oh, you are right, i don’t know shit about them, but heck with that! I’ll play them anyway.

But first.. i need some equipment.. well, this is actually going a lot faster then i thought. I now have a Korg Kaoss Pad II (of course thats not a synth! but a fx-processor, used by a lot of dj’s..), and a small Roland BX-8, 8channel mixer. WOW!
Okey okey, thats not much, BUT, i have two drum computers on my way! A unknown cheap Roland DR550 and coming in from holland the famous Roland TR 606.

Now all i need is a good synth. Right now I’m leaning towarths something KORG like… like a MS10 or MS20. Those are the ones costing a bit more too tho /s!!

Anyway, I’ll keep you posted on my SYNTH-adventure!

P.S. HAHA, you know, my English is always bad and stuff, cause i never had it on school you know, but I like my Firefox extension who always underlines my bad words in red while i type them here in wordpress. Mostly when i see a red underlined word, i just type the word in google and use the suggestion for that word. But now, I typed in “towarths” and got 2 (yes TWO) hits on the front page (out of 10!!) pointing to my website! haha.. thats funny!! People using the same method as me will in the end accept that word for true if i put writing it like that on my pages :P MwhoeHAHAHAHA

I Finally did IT!!! After hours of searching the Internet.. what i say? Days.. months.. years…

Searching for a good back-up amp, I stumbled upon a Marshall Bass amp. You don’t see too many of these and I couldn’t find much info about them either!!! But here are the things I did found:

It’s a Marshall 3520, 200W Bass head

This bass head was in production from 1985 upto 1993. It was in fact 19″ rack mountable, but came in a wooden 19″ cabinet. This was the head version of the 5522 combo.

PDF User manual for the IBS amps (790kB).

Yes, like a good webdesigner, i too keep track of the traffic that hits my website :p

Sneaky? ha! You bet!

Well, i begun to saw a trend coming up. From September to April the visits on my site went up from (respectively) 7,6K up too a stunning (more then double!) 15,7K visits (per month). But then… in May.. something happened and while April had 15,7K visitors.. May instantly dropped… without a reason… to a never seen debt of 4,6K. What’s going on!! I have no clue. Perhaps i should wander who those 15thousend visitors in April are! Bots? Search engine bots?? Spam Bots?? posting spams as comments??

Well, I forgot when i implemented a system to kill Spam Bots.. but that might be the only explanation! Thank god if thats true! 11K spam bots lost interest in my website :) But that was only the beginning. June and July brought me to an even lower unseen debt!! Respectively 760 and 710(!!!) visitors for those months. August nearing its end is going slightly up again and pulled it already over the 1K mark at 1,4K (and counting!) I hope this is thanks to my new, redesigned website, and my current float of new posts!

I sure hope its not because of my writing errors. Luckily my FireFox is in English and he puts a red line under my words if i write a mistake! (yes, sometimes i leave them red underlined, if I’m to lazy again!!).

No music related post??? Gotcha! Hang-on.. and stay tuned for more happy days.

Yesterday, i was able to repair my Gibson RD together with my Marnix! It was nothing to bad, it was just some wire who got loose where my input goes in.. an easy fix actually! It made me wonder tho… cause when my beauty was open like that, and i stared in her guts… I wondered about the MOOG electronics.. so i did a little research.

The Gibson RD guitars were launched in 1977, there were two bass models, the RD Artist and RD Standard, plus 3 guitar models. The RD Artist was Gibsons first active bass guitar. It was a very high quality instrument with a terrific array of sounds, but as was often the case with Gibson basses, it did not get the attention it deserved in terms of sales figures, and by 1981 had disappeared from the Gibson catalogue. It was available in natural, ebony, antique sunburst and fireburst finishes, with maple or ebony fingerboards.

The RD artist first appeared in the 1977 RD catalogue and then the 1978 catalogue, along with the RD standard, and a range of RD guitars. The artists models were the first Gibsons to use active electronics and were powered by a 9 volt battery. The electronics were designed by Moog (another Norlin company at the time) and had built in expansion and compression circuitry. The artist bass used newly designed mark V active humbucking pickups. Exact specifications can be seen by expanding the images to either side of this text. The Gibson Product development director at the time was Bruce Bolen. in this 1978 he explains the vision behind the RD artist.

Bruce Bolen

One of the particular musical qualities that I personally was looking for in one of the models, was a similar effect to that of a steel player - this being the reduction of the intitial attack and the swell of the note after the initial attack had been made. A steel player of course uses a volume pedal to accomplish this but it was still something missing. Bob designed a special circuit that would achieve this as well as an expansion circuit unlike any other that had been designed to date.

Famous users include Krist Novoselic of Nirvana and Kelly Mickelson of The Fucking Eagles and now Tom Maene of Semper Fi!

Yeah, its a busy week.. again!

Tuesday we had our gamenight again at our youthpub. Unfortantly there where no games!! My guess is that the library owner, who runs the game club, is on vacation… But i brought my recently new acquired game “Saboteur” with me. It’s a game for 3 to 10 people, but i learned that anything below 5 players is hard to play for the “Saboteurs”.
Then we played a game of poker. We like to play Texas Holdem with real fiches, not real money!!
We should however play for real money once.. cause its no fun, the kids no they wont loose real money so they bluff, lie and guess a lot faster!! I like to bluff now and then too, but usually, I’m a quick passer!!

Yesterday, I jammed a bit with my cousin Stefaan and drummer Alexander. It was a nice musical evening, and it clicked! It’s not easy to find people who are like minded, and can just jam away on the notes we play. I’m not saying every jam we make is a masterpiece, and contains stuff to make actual songs!!, but we manage fairly to have fun while we play, and thats what most important.

Tonight, its 36 Degrees’ turn. We have our first gig in September with the current line up. Not sure if we’ll make the deadline tho. All suggestions for covers can still be submitted at the über kewl multi community platform over at polderrecords.be => http://forums.polderrecords.be

I woke up early last Saturday, and prepared myself to get ready for another new exciting adventure!

8 AM we picked up my cousin, and took the train in Ostend for a 3 hour trip to Hasselts’ Kiewit. Lucky for us, when we arrived there, and wandered around a bit, we found a Festival :p .

It’s been 9 years ago, i first came here, to the Pukkelpop festival. My first festival my parents allowed me to sleep there, and be there for 3 days! It still looked the same!

All pictures in this post copyright: Aaron North (Guitarplayer of NIN)

The first band we checked out was Sparta. According to my cousin, who knows a lot of music, there used to be a band At the drive in, or something, that split up in Sparta and The Mars Volta. Well, i can say this: The Mars Volta done a better job! A lot! Man, not to sound cocky but Sparta was lame. Not only their backing vocals where a lot better then the main… but the man just didn’t had it. It was boring and inspirationless (i know, the word doesn’t exist, but it should!). Next on the list was:
Albert Hammond JR, yes! son off… and maybe better known as the guitarist with The Strokes. To bad i only saw the last two songs, cause it really sounded nice! Next i left the main stage, because Enter Shikari replaced Lacuna Coil (who I wanted to check out), and we all know how Enter Shikari sounds…. man, i saw them on Rock Werchter earlier this summer and not my thing! So we went to the Skate Stage and saw a couple of songs of The End. All in black, two SG type guitars and a screamer couldn’t convince me eather. Not bad.. but not good eather..
Next was The Shins in the Marque. Not to bad, feelgood, catchy and poppy songs. But a bit to boring for my taste… and I knew what would come tonight… so nothing could really satisfy me on my way to it! While i walked back to the main stage, i spotted Timmy Tipover (Tim Vanhamel - Millionaire) in the audience… I wander what it is for him.. everybody recognising him, probably bored of all the people asking the commen stupid questions… hell.. At the main stage we saw The Streets, not my cop of tea eather, so i watched from a safe distance.. wile i rested out a bit with a beer.
Then we went back to the Marque stage, to saw a youth nostalgica! Silverchair hit the stage, and the only thing i recognised was his voice… sometimes. Actually it was a big dissapointment seeing them. It sometimes reminded me of Brian Adams.. witch is not OK! The young man, i once saw when he was just 18 on one of the first festivals i did, was no longer grunge. Some would see this as good.. but i saw it as bad… no fucked up attitude, just a guy who thinks he made it cause he fucks Natalie, and needs to be in the spotlight for every solo he plays.. to bad..
Kings Of Leon couldn’t inspire me at the Rock Werchter festival, and couldn’t now on Pukkelpop eather! So we planned out to rest a bit and set down with a couple of beers.. in mean time we listend to Belgium’s Ozark Henry, witch i normally cant stand, but wasn’t to bad for background music. Then we heard Lacuna Coil just arrived from the UK and would play a show at the Skate Stage (instead of main stage) so we went to check it out. To get there we had to go passed the Marquee, and again i spotted Tim Vanhamel.. this time together with Aldo Struyf (Also Millionaire and Creature With The Atom Brain) heading towarths the backstage. I wanted to chat with them, but heck… i let them pass on… In the Marquee, we padded up by LCD Soundsystem and while i wondered what that one song was that i know from them, they started playing it… Daft punk is playing at my house…. We just moved on, to the Skate Stage and watched Lacuna Coil for a half hour, and went quickly back while they started Depeche Mode’s Enjoy the silence. Cause we didn’t wanted to be to late for the highlight of the day at the mainstage! Nine Inch Nails did it again. What a show! Treznor, acomponied with Aaron North on guitar, Jeordie White on bass, Alessandro Cortini on keyboards, and Josh Freese on drums. A awesome setup! Aaron was really enjoiable and nice to watch at.. funny to! Man, that guy jumps the stage like a monkey! I’m a big fan of Joardie White, and he again showed he’s more then just the bass player! Josh Freese is wicked too… not only known from his main band The Vandals, but also from James Maynerd Keenans little side project who grew big: A Perfect Circle, where he did the rythme section together with Jeardie White :o
Well, they just blew me away! They where awesome!

And in between the two big bands i defenatly wanted to check out, i run over to the Marquee once again, to watch for some a probably even bigger band… Sonic Youth!

I must admid, even tho i’m grunge (or was), i don’t know a single song of them! I did enjoy Kim Gordon performing on her Thunderbird!

(foto Cia Jansen)
But i soon left to get hold of a nice spot for Tool on the main stage!

Well, what you want me to say… they are THE shit! They are wicked, and awesome… They played almost the same show as in Vorst (i went to in november last year) but you could tell they are more comfartable and used to playing the songs, so they jammed alot in between and in the songs. It was nice!!! The visuals where stunning to!!

Then we went back for a 3hour ride and arrived around 5 AM back in Ostend. Satisfied and impressed once again by NIN’s heavy bass sound!
